My plant count stands at fourteen. I doubled their number earlier this year. Learning to care for my plants over the last few months has been an experience. I cant wait to share everything I’ve learnt with you. I have killed a few plants but don’t tell anyone.
People often think gardening is expensive. It can be if you want exotic plants and fancy planters. If you don’t then it it can be much cheaper. Plants are relatively cheap in Nigeria. I’ve got plants for as cheap as 500 naira. And if you want to be cheaper you can get snipping for nothing and propagate your plants.
However, planters can drink up your garden budget quickly. So here are 6 planter ideas you can make from household items.
1. CUPS
Yes teacups, drinking cups and mason jars make great homes for plants. You can decorate yours to your taste or leave them just as they are. The question of drainage can be solved with a punctured plastic cup. I do this with my teacups.
This idea doesn’t have to be limited to teacups. Deep bowls, old jugs and teapots? you’ve got yourself a planter
2. TINS
Tins make good planters. Old milk or baked beans tins get thrown out all the time. Transform a rusty or boring tin with some paint and you’re good to go. Or you could leave them just as they are. It all adds to the charm. To protect the soil from rust you may line the tin with a plastic bag. Don’t forget to puncture for drainage
3. CRATES
Do you have an old wood crate or box. That can house a mini garden or a single plant. Here is a quick tutorial on how to prepare your crate for plants. You can also decorate the crate like I did with my crate gardens.
4.COLANDERS
This makes absolute sense right?. With already punctured holes, the common household object bees no hassle. You can just plop your plant in and go.
5. BASKETS
Line an old basket with a punctured tarp and you’ve got yourself a planter for indoor or outdoor plants.
6. AN OLD SINK
This is probably the hardest to come across but if you hold on to old plumbing fixtures or there is some demolition going on around you can get one An old sink is a gold for a beautiful garden because it has significant depth and already established drainage. Don’t forget you can make it look great as well!
That’s it. 6 every day household items you can use as planters. A great way to recycle old items and save money. Till next time!
