NIGERIAN PRINT DESIGNERS I LOVE

Pattern is so important in the world of design. It’s important for textiles and in turn fashion, graphics and in turn branding. And how could I forget interiors?

Here’s my list of the Nigerian print designers I love.

1. ADEBUSOLA EKOKO (GRAPES PATTERN BANK)

I discovered Grapes Pattern Bank in 2020 when I realized they were the designers of the print of the dress of the year – Gaia by Kai collective. I’ve enjoyed watching the company grow as its patterns are fresh, graphic and interesting. There’s no fear of colour or geometric limits.

2. ENIYAN FASHION

The first time I came across their work was on Twitter. They posted their final project from fashion school and it was so interesting. I found their Instagram and I’ve been in love ever since. Fashion, print and graphics- they do it all. The thing I love most about their patterns is the play with luminescence.

3. JESUDARA HINMKAIYE

I won’t say I saved the best for last. But you’ll see what I mean when I say Print by Dara’s patterns are truly remarkable. I discovered her work when she won the Vlisco Print Futures Competition. Her work is mesmerizing, it’s whimsical, it is graphic. Her eye for colour, the fluidity it is something different. I hope she gets more work as time goes on because her art deserves to be on everything.

Over the past 2 years I have designed a few patterns for work. I hope to improve my skills as the years go by. Here’s one of my favourite patterns I’ve designed is in print for Obida, a menswear brand.

And something I designed recently.

Who are the Nigerian surface pattern designers you know and love. Tell me. I’d love to know!
